Despite the RCA master of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" being a solo recording it was actually originally attempted as a duet with Ginger Holliday on 15 March 1971 with both her and Elvis present at the recording in RCA's Studio B in Nashville. However with a combination of Elvis and Felton Jarvis unhappy with the result it was rejected but not before some non-vocal overdubs were done the same day and later some back up overdubs were recorded by The Imperials and The Nashville Edition on March 18th.

On 21st May in the same studio Elvis re-tried a duet of the song this time with Temple Riser, using the instrumental track from the previous session but this too was also quickly rejected by Elvis.
