Character Development and Success in Life!
oday we are going to talk about the role of character development in physical - mental-emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It is the second part of three videos, the first video which I put up yesterday is basically about vision and how you have to have a vision to succeed and achieve in life.
The idea of this video is to put yourself out there, that most people don't push hard enough. Todays video is about character development and the next video will be about ethics. In my opinion it's not enough to have success, we have to have integrated success. For our own happiness and wellbeing and for society in general.
To be successful you have to be ruthless, but what's sold to us in society is that you can have instant and easy success. The majority of people have to work very hard in order to be successful. The problem with the necessity of been driven is that often people become too ruthless and end up bulldozing other people.
This is where character development comes in. Character development is whereby you grow your personality and become a balanced person. There are virtues and vices and too some degree successful people have to develop at least some virtues. But if this is all that you do you will be an unbalanced version of yourself.
I want to address this in this video. It has to be a balanced existence. What delineates people with character from people without character is that characterless people tend towards the lowest common denominator (LCD) and so they go towards vices rather than virtues.
To achieve any success in life you are going to have to develop some virtues, such as patience and diligence, but you still might be a lopsided person.
Temperance cures most physical ailments. Young bodies take care of themselves, but after about 30 years of age we have to take care of our bodies, which takes some character development. Also to get through any ill health requires character development. For example the famous physicist Stephen Hawking has suffered MS for over 40 years through sheer strength of character. He has to have a lot of mental strength to not be bothered bout his physical condition (as he is paralysed).
Looking after your mind and emotions takes even more strength of character, because we have reaction and response and having character means responding to life rather than just reacting. Pausing, thinking and responding strategically is a higher level function. In an advanced civilisation we have to be functioning at a higher level. Planning for your future, for example, requires planning and patience etc. If you are a reactive person, it is going to be difficult to do well in todays advanced society. Spiritual wellbeing, whereby you want to grow closer to God means that you have to go against your lower animalistic nature. The road towards happiness is always based upon responding and choosing to do the right thing. All the virtues help you to be more of a success in life! If you want to look after your physical and financial wellbeing you have to develop some virtues. We have to educate poor people as freebies are not enough. Without education (and this includes moral education) we cannot achieve even regular life success.
So just for regular success you need some degree of character development, but to be the best version of yourself and the most satisfied version of yourself you require a good degree of character development.
Many highly successful people are agitated and driven and have no peace of mind or real happiness.
In yesterday’s video we talked about success and how you need to do what you need to do, but also you need to temper your drive and this is where character development comes in.
To some degree ruthlessness is required but this doesn't mean that you have to be a bad person (as in actively hurting others for your own gain). Take a look at the blog article below and work on some of those virtues. Character development will help you to become successful in every area of your life plus it gives you a unique ability to respond to life situations.
