David Bowie Space Oddity Song Facts
Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Space Oddity was written and recorded by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. Space Oddity was first released as a single in 1969. Space Oddity would later appear as the opening track Bowie's second studio album simply titled David Bowie.

The album version of Space Oddity was recorded in June 1969. Bowie sang lead and harmony vocals and played acoustic guitar and the Stylophone. The session musicians were Rick Wakeman (later of Yes fame) on Mellotron, Mick Wayne on guitar, Herbie Flowers on bass, and Terry Cox on drums. The string section on the album version of Space Oddity was arranged by Paul Buckmaster.

Space Oddity has since become one of David Bowie's signature songs. Bowie plays a twelve-string acoustic guitar for Space Oddity, but six string acoustic will work fine as a substitute.
