What kind of wood doesn't burn in an Oregon forest fire?

Rockhounding in the aftermath of the Obenchain fire. We saw an unburned tree chunk surrounded by char. What kind of wood doesn't burn in a forest fire? Petrified wood! It was way too big to haul out by hand. This gigantic piece was an amazing find.
