Active-duty and ballistic missile submariners discuss what it means to carry out the mission of strategic deterrence. For more than 60 years, the U.S. Submarine Force has deterred nuclear attacks as the most survivable leg of the nuclear triad. These interviews were conducted by the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in 2016 for use in the museum’s new long-term exhibit “Preserving Peace: The Navy’s Strategic Deterrence Program.” The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum is one of ten official U.S. Navy museums within the Naval History and Heritage Command.
