Active-duty and ballistic missile submariners explain why they chose submarine service in these interviews. Sailors are drawn to the U.S. Submarine Force for many reasons, from the strong comradery and the community’s elite reputation, to small crew sizes and the increased responsibilities and challenges of submarine work. These interviews were conducted by the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in 2016 for use in the museum’s new long-term exhibit “Preserving Peace: The Navy’s Strategic Deterrence Program.” The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum is one of ten official U.S. Navy museums within the Naval History and Heritage Command.
