Don't Worry About Money | Part 1 | Stop Worry and Anxiety Series

Don’t worry about money! Instead, let’s learn what Jesus teaches us about it in the Bible, so we can relate to it the Way God wants us to!

I grew up hearing “We don’t have money for that” pretty much on a daily basis. My parents lived their whole lives in poverty under communism. Everyone had to work, was poor, and there wasn’t even stuff to buy in the stores. So when communism “fell” in 1989, I was hoping things would change. And some of them did, but not my parents’ mentality about it.

They had gotten used to putting money before people – thinking money is the most important thing in the world, while people are to be used. I didn’t realize the extent of this until one day, my mother said something to me that showed me if she ever had to choose between me and money, she wouldn’t choose me.

So I ended up hating money, thinking it was evil, and staying away from it, on purpose. This hate of money combined with a fear of failure (developed over years of hearing, “You’ll never do anything right”) led me to avoiding getting a job, and therefore limiting my life tremendously. But, as we already know, sin (anything and everything that’s unhealthy, harmful, and hurtful) is blinding.

I didn’t even realize how unhealthy my whole thinking about money was and how much I was restricted in my life because of it. Worrying and being anxious about money was taking up a lot of my mental and emotional space that I then didn’t have for my husband. Instead of spending my time thinking about him, and showing him how much I loved him (and actually utilizing that time *to love him!), my mind was busy worrying about money – as if that helped in some sort of way!

Not only that, but I had become obsessed with it, and without realizing, I even ended up adopting my parents’ beliefs about money, putting it before other people, especially my husband. For example, I’d argue with my husband because he had bought something without thinking it wasn’t on sale! The fear of money had become an idol in my life, and I didn’t even know it!

Until one day, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the slavery to money I was living in. I decided to turn to Jesus and follow His Teachings about money, as opposed to continuing worrying about it. And this is my advice to you as well: don’t worry about money! But turn to Jesus instead!

Because getting rid of such emotional garbage such will help us to not only be able to feel loved by others in whatever love language they may be speaking, but it will help us to be able to be more loving towards them in all the love languages!
