Kids Crafting for Better Adulting! Melting Crayons

When you realize you have hundreds of broken or naked crayons going unused what are you to do? My solution is to give them new life and melt them into a new shape. I use mini muffin tins and in ten minutes in a 200 degree oven, they are brand new crayons.

The kids are always ripping the paper off or breaking the crayons, just for fun, and then getting annoyed when they pick the wrong color. The mystery of not knowing how the crayons are going to turn out, or exactly what colors are being used is part of the fun.

You can use any mold you have, as long as it is oven safe, and the crayons should pop right out. I have never tried melting the crayons in a glass tray, so I can not guarantee the effectiveness of those, but standard non-stick or silicone molds have worked well.

To get yourself into the calming state, turn on the oven light and watch the crayons melt for the five to ten minutes it will take. The crayons melt relatively quickly, so it won't take long to see the changes start to happen. Let your mind stop racing and just watch the melting. Watch the crayons take on a new shape, take on a new life.

After they have cooled, flip the tray over and bang out the crayons, or pop them out. If they are stuck a little run a tooth pick on the side of the crayon to loosen them.

That is all. Simple and useful.
