The iconic Crystal Mill which is Colorado's second most photographed location near Marble in the Elk Mountains. Near Aspen and Crested Butte ski areas, the gnarly mountain pass Schofield Pass passes the mill and the town of Crystal on it's way between Marble and Crested Butte. The Crystal Mill has been within the same family for several generations. Originally built in 1890 to supply power for drills for the miners in the area, it is now a registered historic landmark and is famous among many a photographer.

It is on private property, the same land as the nearby Crystal ghost town (now lodging with rustic and historic cabins and primitive camping, with one developed campground). We stayed at the developed campsite for 2 nights which gave us exclusive access to the whole property. This also includes an unknown waterfall.

We went down for new moon to photograph the mill against the night sky, but ran into very smoky skies from western wildfires. Though the Milky Way was not very clear, we were still able to come away with some night photos.

Not far above the town of Crystal is a part of the famous 4 pass loop of the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness area and is a direct access to West Maroon Pass from the summit of Schofield Pass. From above the Crystal Town is access to Snowmass Lake and Trail Rider Pass (part of the 4 pass loop).
