President Trump: “I Am Not Starting a New Party”
What is the future of the conservative movement and who will lead it?
Today on Sekulow, we discuss and give our analysis of CPAC. The big question: Who will lead the conservative movement into the future?
CPAC kicked off in Florida towards the end of last week and ended yesterday. You heard from many conservative leaders, including former President Donald Trump, who delivered his first major speech since leaving office in January.
There were a number of conservative leaders who gave speeches and are big proponents of the “America First” policies of the Trump Administration. Our very own Senior Counsel for Global Affairs Mike Pompeo and Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell both gave major addresses at CPAC.
During every CPAC there is a presidential straw poll. This time there were two different polls. One had President Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination and the other did not. In the one that included President Trump, he received 55% support from those that participated in the poll. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in his home state, only received 21%.
The most interesting part of the straw polls was the support for President Trump’s policies. Where is the Party going? 97% of those surveyed approved of the job President Trump did in office. That is after he has left office following a controversial election. One thing that tells you is whoever wants to become the Republican nominee in 2024 will need to run on an “America First” platform.
There were rumors that President Trump was considering starting a third political party. He put those rumors to bed, stating:
"We’re not starting new parties. You know, they kept saying, he’s going to start a brand new party. We have the Republican Party. It’s going to unite and be stronger than ever before. I am not starting a new party. That was fake news, fake news. No. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Let’s start a new party and let’s divide our vote so that you can never win. No, we’re not interested in that."
The 2022 mid-term elections are not so far away and then we’re off to the races for the 2024 nomination. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out.
Today was also the first day of our Matching Challenge month. We cannot do our critically important work or add members to our team like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo without your help and support. The Matching Challenge means that every donation is effectively doubled.
$5 becomes $10. $10 becomes $20. Please support the work of the ACLJ by donating today.
The full broadcast is complete with much more discussion by our team about the future of the conservative movement and who may potentially lead it.
