In this video, I'm scratching Hanna's ear where I had added color. This brings back lights and adds dimension. I'm also knocking back some of the black that I'd left after the first pass of scratching. I'll add color again in the next step.Show more

Those of you who have watched my process know this, but for those who are new, I work in layers: scratching off black, adding color & sometimes more black, scratching those layers... repeat... until I achieve the values, tones & details that I want.

Generally (but each drawing is a little different), the first pass of scratching results in a well-defined black & white drawing: 80%(ish) complete or more. Then I add the color & work through the add/scratch/add/scratch process. I still leave quite a bit of black in the finished drawing though. That's my personal preference and I think it helps define my style.
