LA Schools Replace Cops with 'Climate Coaches'

The Los Angeles School Board has approved a plan to cut one-third of its police budget. The money will be diverted to fund new programs under the new Black Student Achievement Plan. With Today's ALG Minute, I'm Catherine Mortensen. The board voted to cut 133 police officers and replace them with "climate coaches." According to the plan, the ‘climate coaches’ are trained to implement “positive school culture and climate,” use “de-escalation strategies” to resolve conflict, understand and address “implicit bias.” The board said the cut to help black students feel safer. In the months after the Covid lockdowns closed the Los Angeles schools, the district saw burglaries on school property soar 700 percent. An official with the Los Angeles School Police Officers Association said budget cuts will lead to further crime - quote -- especially once it gets out into the general public that there won’t be officers responding to these incidents.
