Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD, is a compound known as a cannabinoid that is extracted from the cannabis plant. Cannabis may sound familiar as it is the same parent plant that marijuana is produced from. Marijuana is a specific variety that is grown under special conditions to be very high in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but very low in CBD. It is well known around the world for the euphoric effect it causes known as “high” which is a product of its inflated THC content. A lesser-known variety of the cannabis plant that has been used for over 50,000 years is called industrial hemp or just simply hemp. Hemp is very high in CBD but very low in THC. This means hemp has all of the reported therapeutic benefits of marijuana but with none of the psychotropic effects. In fact, CBD extracted from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) is legal for cultivation, transportation, and sale in the United States after the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. However, three states, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota, still classify it as illegal. Before starting a CBD regimen, check your local laws to ensure you’re not breaking any.
