The Reproach of Egypt in Joshua 5:9

In Joshua 5:9, God said he had removed the reproach of Egypt from Israel. What does that mean and what does it have to do with Gilgal?

P.S. "Crossed the Jericho" should be "Crossed the Jordan", of course.
