Children of horror, while digging through a rat filled Salem cemetery we stumbled onto the skull and bones of Henry Kuttner. This wizard conjured some truly terrifying tales in his brief career as a master of horror, science fiction, and fantasy.
Growing up in poverty Henry Kuttner first made a living working in a literary agency before finding writing success with his first submission “The Graveyard Rats” to Weird Tales. This first story submitted to Weird Tales is still a terrifying tale after all these years.
Kuttner and his wife C.L. Moore were members of the Lovecraft Circle and corresponded often with H.P. Lovecraft. Their collaborations produced many great stories that we will read in the future.
“The Graveyard Rats"is a horror short story by Henry Kuttner, first published in the magazine Weird Tales in March 1936. It’s the tale of Old Masson the caretaker of a neglected Salem cemetery and his feud with the graveyard rats.
It was reprinted in The Gruesome Book (1983), edited by horror sorcerer Ramsey Campbell. There was another reprint in Weird Tales: Seven Decades of Terror (1997). "The Graveyard Rats" was also adapted as part of the Dan Curtis made-for-cable anthology film Trilogy of Terror II.
Again, this is one terrifying story guaranteed to make your skin crawl.
Can Old Masson dig to the secret of the graveyard rats? Or will his feud with them be another game of cat and mouse?--JL
