Just what as the Lenten Spirituality of the Minims? St. Francis Paola obliged his followers to observe a perpetual Lent, and always to abstain, not only from flesh, but also from all white meats, or food made from milk, such as cheese, butter, cream etc.. They were also to abstain from all eggs…in short to abstain and fast from all which the ancient laws of the Church used forbid in Lent. St. Francis Paola’s intention in enjoining this perpetual abstinence was to repair, in some sort, the abuses of Lent among believers. He was always saddened to see that the holy fast and abstinence had been relaxed so much by the mitigations which Holy Mother Church was obliged to tolerate, because of the lukewarmness of her children. He hoped also, by example, to open the eyes of the rest of the faithful, to whom the sight of such a life long…perpetual Lenten fast…would inspire the men of his age at least to live the forty days of Lent in a more severe way. But what would St. Francis Paola say of our age…the 21st Century…where penance is largely absent from our lives?
