Operation Mockingbird: Diluting Truth & Manipulating The Masses

Tonight's video is about Operation Mockingbird, an alleged large-scale project undertaken by the CIA beginning in the 1950s in which they recruited American journalists into a propaganda network. The recruited journalists were put on payroll by the CIA and instructed to write fake stories that promoted the views of the intelligence agency.

This program has been reported multiple times, but somehow everyone decides to forget about the implications and just move on with their lives.

An example of this can be found in a New York Times article that exposed the covert operation in 1967 when it reported that the National Student Association received funding from the CIA.

In 1977, an article in Rolling Stone, written by Carl Bernstein, was titled "The CIA and the Media." In the article, Bernstein said that the CIA "has secretly bankrolled numerous foreign press services, periodicals and newspapers—both English and foreign language—which provided excellent cover for CIA operatives."

So, journalists were reportedly blackmailed and threatened into this network. The intelligence agencies used wartime rhetoric to display the need for a program…in more recent years, the "war" rhetoric ramped up for domestic causes. Now we find ourselves in a situation where sayings such as "we are in a war for the soul of America" are used to justify continued manipulation and targeting of citizens.

The intel agencies and the broader government must pay well in order for journalists to denigrate their profession, sow discord, create conflict, ramp up tensions, rally against their fellow citizens, spread disinformation, and willingly discard truth altogether in subservience to their handlers…they must pay real well.
