Are you getting out of bed at 6:00 AM and immediately look for coffee to help wake you up? While it's true that we live different lives with different lifestyles, most of our common denominator is a morning cup of coffee.

If you're avid of Dr. J's podcasts and Q&A's, you know he often talks about adrenal glands and how they can get easily fatigued. While there are people who are just fine with coffee, there are also plenty of people reaching their third or fourth coffee to keep their body functioning.

Your coffee has caffeine, which helps you to stay alert and awake. However, every time you drink it, your adrenal gland produces the primary stress hormone, cortisol. With the consistent coffee intake, you might force your adrenals to overproduce hormone, leading to adrenal fatigue. Suggestive signs of adrenal fatigue are sleep disturbance, irritability, brain fog, a significant craving for sweets, and memory issues. If left unfixed, the massive elevation of cortisol levels may lead to anxiety, depression, weight gain, sleep issues, and digestion problems.

Dr. J wants you to remember that your body produces more cortisol in the morning (20-30 minutes) after you wake up, so it's good to give your cortisol levels the time to decrease and start enjoying your mid-morning coffee instead. Since caffeine keeps you awake and alert, it is also good to take breaks or limit your intake and try to cease it mid-afternoon to help improve your sleeping patterns as well.
