PEARLS BEFORE SWINE explained

I have a question about Matthew 7:6, where it talks about not giving what is holy to the dogs, or throwing your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn around and attack you. Is that referring to knowing when to share the word of god with others, or does it mean something else?
