Honoring Your Parents (even the bad ones)

The Book of Proverbs repeatedly says to listen to the advice of your parents. The fifth commandment says to honor your parents for a long life. Paul repeats this promise in the New Testament. But what does it actually mean? And how does listening to your parents improve or lengthen your life? What if you have terrible, cruel parents?
