Restoring Crab Bank

Crab Bank is one of five seabird sanctuaries owned and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to provide critical shorebird nesting habitat for black skimmer, brown pelican, and royal tern. Crab Bank is now a tiny fraction of its original size and all remaining nesting habitat was washed away in 2017 by Hurricane Irma. The restoration of Crab Bank has been a priority to many Lowcountry residents and an upcoming restoration project calls for the one-time placement of 660,000 cubic yards of compatible material, which will create about 28 available acres as habitat for nesting brown pelicans. The Corps and DNR will continue to communicate with local leaders and the Town of Mount Pleasant as the construction approaches. Learn more in this video.
