Really, social media platforms are just that -- a platform. A place for online business owners, creators, and marketers to share their work, their ideas, and their content.

However, it's important to understand that building a huge following on social media around your online business, your cause, or your work shouldn't be the goal. After all, some giant tech corporation owns the platform, not us.

They make the rules, not us. They determine what's okay and what isn't. Their algorithms determine what gets seen and what doesn't.

I only say this because there's so much hype and "you've gotta be there or you're missing out" kinda attitude whenever a new social media platform comes along. Like, didn't we learn from the last one?

Social media platforms are simply places to share the work we care about online. It's a way to meet and attract the sorts of people we want to serve in our business. Social media platforms are NOT our online business.

Social media platforms are a place to share things about our business. Further, it's important to understand that the followers we have on social media are not our audience. They're more like casual spectators who've shown at least enough interest in what we're doing to click "Follow" or "Subscribe."

So please, don't misunderstand the role of social media...if you even choose to make use of it in your online business.
