Two Kookaburra's with a guest for dinner.
When I was in Australia, I was treated with this natural display by the famous Kookaburra.
To say I was suprised at what I witnessed is an understatement. I knew that the Kookaburra is a large bird in the family of king fishers, so I assumed it fed upon fish. Not true. So after a little research it now makes more sense.
Kookaburras are almost exclusively carnivorous, eating mice, snakes, insects, small reptiles, and the young of other birds; unlike many other kingfishers, they rarely eat fish, although they have been known to take goldfish from garden ponds. In zoos they are usually fed food for birds of prey.
Prey is seized by pouncing from a suitable perch. Small prey is eaten whole, but larger animals are beaten and picked apart.
Has anyone else seen this bird hunting before?
