So, you've gone to all the effort to create a great product, launch an online business, build a passionate audience...but you can't bring yourself to ask for the sale. And you know what? I understand and empathize.

Often, new business owners are resistant to "selling" because of all the feelings and mental imagery that "selling" brings up. What do you think of when you think of "selling?"

If you're like most people, you probably think of a used car salesman or someone hawking vacuums door to door. And we think of the personality that goes along with it, right? Overbearing, sleazy hustlers who go for the "hard sell."

And neither you or I want to feel scammy or dirty, right? But at the same time, we have our online business...and our business lives and dies by sales.

So, we're stuck. On the one hand we need sales to survive. On the other hand we don't want to feel like a dirtbag. And besides, selling is scary, right?

So how to we rectify this problem? Well what if all this stuff about sleazy hard selling and pushy sales tactics isn't selling? What if I told you that all the sleazy, dirtbag, hustler-style hard-closing sales strategies are actually for amateurs?

If you've done your market research well (and I hope you have) and if you've developed a product or service that can solve a big, hairy problem that your market has...then why wouldn't you want to tell them about it? Why wouldn't you want to help them solve their problems?

Real, true selling has nothing to do with what goes on in used car lots, in tacky poorly lit offices, or out of a sample case on front porches all across the country.

Instead, selling is about relationships. It's about building trust, credibility, and genuine relationships. And often this takes time...but it's well worth the effort.

The best businesses don't have to dig for new customers because they've worked hard to cultivate lasting relationships with customers who come back again and again. And in fact, the best businesses don't have customers. They have something more like friends.

In my learning company, Ten Ton Online, I don't have customers. I have students. And over the years I've gotten to know a lot of them very well...so for many of my students, it's closer to a friendship.

Compare this to a cold impersonal one-off transaction with a company you don't even like. We've all been there. And it doesn't make us want to come back.

So don't think of selling as being sleazy. Think of it as being helpful, being of service, and about cultivating lasting relationships. Do that, and you'll never have to sell a day in your life!
