Is it possible to upgrade a website to e-commerce? That is to say, can you add an e-commerce component...can you add an online store...onto an existing website?

The short answer is, yes of course. Going into more detail though, a lot of this really depends on how your website was built in the first place. For instance, if your website was built with WordPress, then adding an online store, or e-commerce, onto your site is as simple as installing a plugin.

If you don't know, WordPress plugins are website add-ons that add extra features, behaviours, and functionality onto your existing website. Think of things like that, booking calendars, and yes...e-commerce too.

And as far as e-commerce is concerned, there are a few WordPress plugins to choose from -- one of the best being WooCommerce.

Now whether you've used WordPress to build your website or you've used another approach to building your website, very often what you can do is set up your online store in a sub-directory of your website.

So for example, you could set up your store to run alongside your existing website, and have it located in a directory like "yourdomain.com/store" or "/shop" -- something like that.

Or if you wanted to, you could overhaul your entire website and shift it entirely over to a 100% e-commerce online shop...but that obviously would be a much bigger job.
