Does Having a Handgun License Only Provide an Exemption for Just Handguns Near Schools in the USA?

I was asked about the Federal Gun Free School Zones Act of 1990.

A friend wanted to know how one may be exempt from it and legally carry a firearm within 1000 feet of a school in the USA.

His question was, "What if we make legislation in Oklahoma to license carrying long guns just like with pistols? Would that get us an exemption from the GFSZA?"

I quickly told him that such a thing would be unnecessary as our existing OK SDA License covers it. Not only that, but the last thing we want to do is have MORE licensing and not less.

Bottom Line: You are exempt with ANY firearm you may legally possess so long as you have a "carry license" issued by the state that the school is in.
