The mountain named ‘Devil’s’ Courthouse is located at the Western edge of the Pisgah National Forest within the Nantahala National Forest at mile marker 422 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s elevation is at 5,720 feet. On clear days four states can be seen from it’s panoramic view. Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and of course North Carolina. Cherokee lore tells of a giant living in cave near the area known as Jutaculla or Tsul’kalu. The name itself more than likely comes from the sinister aspect of the rock formation or because legend holds that the devil held court in the cave that lies beneath the rock. Cherokee lore names this place as he Jutaculla’s private dancing chamber and dwelling place of the slant eyed giant.

The high altitude is home to many protected plants and animals including the peregrine falcon. The trail itself is lined with moss, fern, rhododendron, and balsam fir. The grounds outside the trail at this location are off limits because of the rarity of the plants. (This is one trail I do recommend staying on the trails for this reason and because beyond the wall is very steep and dangerous) The trail itself is just under a mile round trip with a climb in altitude of 258 feet it is steep but the trail is considered to be a ‘moderate’ hike.

15-20min hike depending on fitness level..
4 state panoramic view…
