In Irelands war of Independance one of the leaders who was executed by firing Squad by the British was Joseph Plunkett , as a last request he asked to be able to marry his sweetheart Grace Gifford . The married in the prison and he was executed the next day . He wrote some words on his cell wall and this song was wrote from it .
