The Prophet in the Wilderness?

Why is it that John the Baptist was in the wilderness? Furthermore, why is it that we so often see prophets on the outskirts of society calling for those inside to repent? There is liberty in being outside the popular culture, outside the ordinary institutions. There is an ability think clearly, and also be free from worldly conformity, that is peer pressure.
