Gorillas are land-based, mainly herbivorous primates inhabiting the forests of central sub-Saharan Africa. The Gorilla genus is split into two species: the Eastern Gorilla and the Western Gorilla (both critically endangered) and either four or five subspecies. They are the largest living primates in the world. The DNA of gorillas is very similar to that of humans, from 95 to 99 per cent based on what is used, and they are the nearest living kin of humans after chimpanzees and bonobos.
