Owls, birds of the order Strigiformes, comprise about 200 species of mainly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright posture, a broad, wide head, binocular vision and binaural hearing, and feathers suited for silent flight. Exceptions include the diurnal-northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl.
