Mae Brussell on The Son of Sam - SONS OF UNCLE SAM
David Berkowitz was dubbed the “Son of Sam.” But the late Mae Brussell corrected this to “Son of Uncle Sam,” a new breed of killer being produced by the U.S. military-industrial complex.
“If you seriously doubt that anything really evil could ever exist beneath this nation’s solid front of patriotism, religion, and ‘have a good day’ brotherhood, this book will shake your conviction…” Thus says a snippet from Maury Terry’s book, The Ultimate Evil (Bantam Books, 1989).
In a radio broadcast from over twenty years ago, Dave Emory summarized Maury Terry’s book as follows: “This book basically links many of the horrendous serial killings that have taken place in this country – such as the Son of Sam killings in New York, the .44 caliber killings, the depredations of the so-called ‘Manson family’ – and points out that these are all links in a nationwide chain of conspiracy. And that the people who “took the fall” for these crimes, David Berkowitz and Charles Manson, while involved, were actually just bit players. And that the people actually committing these crimes are alive, free, and very wealthy, very powerful, and very, very well-connected.”
Maury Terry, a journalist, had begun investigating the Son of Sam shootings before David Berkowitz was arrested. Terry published a series of investigative articles in the Gannett newspapers in 1979 which challenged the official explanation of a lone gunman. Vigorously denied by police at the time, Terry’s articles were widely read and discussed; they were later assembled in book form as The Ultimate Evil. Largely impelled by these reports of accomplices and Satanic cult activity, the Son of Sam case was reopened by Yonkers police in 1996, but no new charges were filed. For lack of findings, the investigation was eventually suspended but remains unclosed. (“David Berkowitz”, Wikipedia, Dec. 27, 2012)
The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper of March 19, 1981 carried one of Maury Terry’s later reports. The “Son of (Uncle) Sam” did not act alone. David Berkowitz belonged to a satanic cult based in Yonkers, New York. The satanists ordered Berkowitz to get a job at the Yonkers Animal Shelter. He was to steal away some of the dogs for satanic sacrifices. But that job did not go through. Berkowitz told Maury Terry the “Son of (Uncle) Sam” killings which afflicted New York in 1976-1977 were committed by members of the Yonkers satanic cult. Berkowitz said the authorities “would have to be idiots” to miss seeing others besides himself were involved. (“‘Son of Sam’ says he did not act alone in murders”, by Maury Terry. Gannett News Service)
“Evil does exist, evil is”, says a character in the 1963 movie, “The List of Adrian Messenger.” Adrian Messenger (John Merivale) is mysteriously killed in a plane crash and Anthony Gethryn (George C. Scott) who is a friend of the family is asked to investigate. Gethryn had been given a list of names by Messenger at the house prior to Messenger’s fatal plane journey. The men named on the “list” are all being murdered one by one and Gethryn has to use all his investigative powers to try to track down the killer and stop him before others on the list are also murdered.
But, says one character to Anthony Gethryn (George C. Scott): “If you really think that all these deaths were tied together it would involve a mass murder plot so preposterous as to defy belief”.
Evil does exist, evil is. “If you seriously doubt that anything really evil could ever exist beneath this nation’s solid front of patriotism, religion, and ‘have a good day’ brotherhood,” consider how Maury Terry’s book has disappeared and been replaced by omnipresent Harry Potter books.
David Richard Berkowitz (born Richard David Falco; June 1, 1953), also known as Son of Sam and the .44 Caliber Killer, is an American serial killer and arsonist whose crimes terrorized New York City from July 1976 until his arrest in August 1977. Shortly after his arrest in August 1977, Berkowitz confessed to killing six people and wounding several others in the course of eight shootings in New York between 1976 and 1977. He has been imprisoned for those crimes since 1977. Berkowitz subsequently claimed that he was commanded to kill by a demon that possessed his neighbor’s dog.
Berkowitz later amended his confession to claim he was the shooter in only two incidents, personally killing three people and wounding a fourth. The other victims were killed, Berkowitz claimed, by members of a violent satanic cult of which he was a member. Though he remains the only person charged with, or convicted of the shootings, some law enforcement authorities argue that Berkowitz’s claims are credible. According to John Hockenberry[1] formerly of MSNBC and NPR, many officials involved in the original “Son of Sam” case suspected that more than one person was committing the murders. Hockenberry also reported that the Son of Sam case was reopened in 1996 and, as of 2004, it was still considered open.
