Here They Come – New Caravans Head North, 3460
Good Sunday morning, I’m still reporting on the coup.
It starting all over again. A brand new caravans of as many as 9,000 Honduran migrants breached the Guatemalan border crossing on Saturday , ultimately seeking to walk through Mexico and cross into the United States .
About 2000 members of the Guatemalan army attempted to block part of the caravan, however video shows mostly young men scuffling with soldiers as they ran right by them.
Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei issued a statement calling on Honduran authorities “to contain the mass exit of its inhabitants.”
President Giammattei’s statement continued:
“The government of Guatemala regrets this violation of national sovereignty and calls on the governments of Central America to take measures to avoid putting their inhabitants at risk amid the health emergency due to the pandemic.”
Governments throughout the region have made it clear that they will not let the caravan pass. Guatemala has set up control points on highways Ann says it will attempt two detain migrants and send them by bus back to Honduras.
Mexico has stepped up training of its national guard members and immigration agents on its southern border in preparation for not only this, but other caravans that are expected. Mexico says it will produce a significant show of force in an attempt to discourage caravans from crossing into Mexico.
On Friday night more than 3000 Honduran migrants managed to push their way past border guards before dawn. Another group entered Guatemala yesterday.
The Friday morning group set out about 4:00 AM from San Pedro Sula, including entire families carrying sleeping children. Honduran police escorted them along the highway.
Both national and regional governments along the path of the migration North have seemed more determined than ever to stop the migrants progress.
Francisco Yáñez, Head of mexico's national immigration Institute, said on Friday that his country must :
“ guarantee our national territory ” and called for “an orderly safe and legal migration with respect for human rights and with humanitarian policies.”
However, in the past, NGOs- nongovernmental organizations- have funded these caravans in their quest to penetrate The United States borders.
Last year, other attempted caravans were broken up by Guatemalan authorities before they reached Mexico.
