Smoking the bees, this is done to help the bees from stinging. It does not subdue the bees. The smoke replicates a forest fire and the bees will fill their honey stomachs full of honey ready to leave the hive, just in case they need to find a new home. This, in turn, has the benefit of making it more difficult for the bees to bend and stick there Barb into you.
