The Surfside Flyers Kite Club and a few others, got together on December 12, 2020, to put on the annual Surfside Beach Nite Kite Festival. This was a free event, open to the public. Originally scheduled to be held at Surfside Beach, the area that they planned to utilize for tethering the kites, was under water due to recent rain storms. So they relocated north up the coast a couple of miles to the beach in front of Stahlman Park. This worked out quite well for both the kite flyers and the public access to the beach.

High tide was at 5:45pm, just after Sunset, so it was easy to figure out the safe places to bury the kite anchors in the sand, or use existing poles and barrels. As the tide receded, it left more hard packed sand that became safe for cars to drive on.

The event was sponsored by Surfside Beach, with the help of the area Kite Clubs. I agreed to come video the event with my drone, as I happen to be a certified Part 107 commercial drone pilot. I would have done it as a hobbyist, just for fun. I was not paid for this service and did not ask for payment or compensation. The challenge itself was worth the 520 miles round trip and the hours of driving.

The show was fantastic and exceeded my expectations. I can only hope that this video does justice to the event. Being there in person was a very wild experience and I look forward to possibly showing up for some of their future events if my schedule permits such luxury.
