One of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations,
Minato Mirai (meaning Harbor of theFuture) is a picture-perfect and
extremely romantic port area that looks best at night when thefuturistic
buildings.
Nippon Maru is a Japanese museum ship and former training vessel. She is permanently docked in Yokohama harbor, in Nippon Maru Memorial Park. She was built by Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in Kobe, and was launched on 27 January 1930 alongside her sister ship Kaiwo Maru.
Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU was built in 1930 as a training ship for cadets. The ship brought up 11,500 cadets
for 54 years until her retirement as a training ship in 1984. During her service, NIPPON MARU logged 45.4 times around
the earth (1,830,000 kilometers in total).
The ship was placed under the authority of the City of Yokohama in 1984 and has been open to the public since 1985. NIPPON MARU is also used for a full-sail exhibit in cooperationwith volunteers and provides marine educational programs to students.
NIPPON MARU was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 2017.
