The Gary Powers shootdown over the USSR was impossible. Powers blamed Lee Harvey Oswald for it and claimed to have been interrogated by Oswald dressed as a colonel during his Russian captivity.
The effect of the CIA engineered U2 scandal was to kill Eisenhower's Crusade for Peace, which would have ended the Cold War.
