Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet-era leader known for establishing friendly relations with the United States, is now questioning the stability of the U.S. and claiming that he knows who perpetrated the attack on the nation's capital.

“The assault on the Capitol was evidently planned in advance, and it is clear by whom,” he told RT, Russia's state-run media. RT, without evidence, speculated in its write-up that he was referring to the Trump administration.

Gorbachev added that the civil unrest “called into question the future fate of the United States as a state,” predicting that a "new generation" of those who oppose the prospect of domestic strife will, as he and former President Ronald Reagan did in the 1980s, "turn to detente."

So serious that even the ACLU – which has largely been indifferent as civil liberties were sacrificed in the name of Covid – expressed concern:

For months, President Trump has been using social media platforms to seed doubt about the results of the election and to undermine the will of voters. We understand the desire to permanently suspend him now, but it should concern everyone when companies like Facebook and Twitter wield the unchecked power to remove people from platforms that have become indispensable for the speech of billions — especially when political realities make those decisions easier.

This is not a First Amendment issue, even though many see it as such. The Constitution prohibits the government from infringing on free speech, not individual companies. The issue now is one of monopolies.
Speaking to Interfax, Gorbachev explained that the riots in Washington on January 6 “called into question the future fate of the United States as a state,” expressing confidence that the assault on the Capitol was planned in advance. He also believes it’s obvious who was responsible.

In 1991, Gorbachev himself was the target of a failed coup d’état, when disgruntled members of the Soviet Communist Party tried to overthrow the country’s Western-leaning leadership.
