Lions are social animals that live in a herd of (3-30) individuals, depending on the abundance of food. The herd includes males and females (lionesses) and cubs, often associated with members of the herd. And sometimes males who are not members of the herd may join the herd, but only temporarily. In good seasons when prey is available, the herd consists of four to six females leading the flock, otherwise a lioness or two lead the flock. Lions prefer to live in a herd because that means more success in hunting
