Online technologies are no longer tools that parents can choose to ignore. In the 21st century, such technologies are powerful environmental forces that shape our self-conception, interactions, and even understandings of reality. As a result, families and children are increasingly becoming “datafied”—that is, their behaviors and identities are being translated into data that can be collected, mined, traded, and sold to produce new data-collecting applications that can, in turn, be sold back to them.
