1 Deceased, 1 Critical After Major Accident, NEW WILLARD, January 6, 2021 - At approximately 4:20 pm on January 6, 2021, a white utility truck was south-bound on US-59. An 18 wheeler attempted to crossover from the north-bound side of 59 to the south end of Loop 116, but failed to yield to the utility truck. The pickup slammed into the side of the trailer portion of the 18 wheeler ripping the top off of the pickup. Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Heavy Rescue Unit, Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Constable Darwon Evans, and Troopers Colton McQuilkin, Kevin Burman, and Sergeant Sam Lattner with the Texas Highway Patrol. The pickup had two occupants (driver and a passenger). The driver was communicating with the firemen that he was alive. Sadly, the passenger was killed on impact. All names involved in this accident have not yet been released. Firemen used the Jaws-of-Life to cut away the tisted metal and were able to carefully remove the driver who was immediately transported from the scene by ambulance. Justice of the Peace, Darrell Longino performed an inquest at the scene for the deceased passenger. Traffic on the south-bound side of 59 was partially blocked during investigation and cleanup. Wreckers from Riley Wrecker Service and Clifton Chevrolet were summoned to clean up the mess. This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol. We will update this story when we receive the names of the victims of this accident.
