How to remove the firewall side, bank 1 catalytic converter from a 2013 Ford Explorer, 2011-2019 Gen 5 years should be similar. The vehicle had an intermittent check engine light for the P0420 (and P0430) code related to an inefficient catalyst. Both converters were replaced at the same time (bank 2 code is P0430). This video only shows the rear. Vehicle had 160k miles at the time of repair and the codes were eliminated by replacing both cats.
A couple notes:
1)it's probably better to remove the axle bolt from the outside of the hub before removing the wheel, so that you can pull the axle out in one piece/one movement, rather than stressing the cv joint like i did. (I had to remove the boot to get the parts in the joint to line up again).
2)You only have to pull the axle out of the transmission about 5 inches to make enough space to get the cat through that space.
3)I also removed the heat shield just above the crossmember...I am not sure that's necessary but make sure you put it back in place before you put the new cat in or you won't have enough space to move it back into position.
4)I forgot to show how to remove the intake manifold...but it's pretty straight forward.
