Puppy Pedicure! While this isn’t actually doing anything to puppy’s claws, it’s doing wonders for puppy’s brain. Maybe it’s a “neurocure”? 😉

Yesterday I mentioned introducing novel items, BUT, introducing new things in a way that is not overwhelming to puppy (because overwhelming puppies can cause as much damage as not socializing them at all).
🐾
Here, I’m using an electric toothbrush for a very short period of time. Not only is the sound odd, but the sensation is certainly a first for those lil’ pads. I have found it is best to introduce stimuli like this when puppy is tired. Not only is puppy relaxed and happy (and thus not inclined to over zealously attempt to chew it), but learning is reinforced during sleep, so it’s great to do something like this before a good long nap (I wrote a prior post about how sleep puts learning on the brain’s hard drive).
🐾
Practically speaking, this exercise does wonders for raising a puppy that accepts claw trimming and the use of an electronic nail file. Necessary grooming tasks which many dogs fear. We tell our families to continue messing with puppy feet from the moment they get home, as foot sensitivity is something they can easily develop (thus the need to daily touch/squeeze pads, regardless of whether any grooming is being done). It’s a little thing, but it’s a little thing that makes a big difference in the life of a dog!
