abolition of slavery
During the American Civil War, the British people debated whether to support the Union or the Confederacy. For most of the cotton-mill workers in Manchester, England, the war had cost them their livelihoods. However, they had long disliked working with cotton picked by slaves. Would the hope of restoring the cotton trade cause them to side with the South, or would the hope of abolishing slavery cause them to side with the North?
