event, related to the use of an aircraft, which occurs between the moment a person boards a flight with the intention of making a flight and the moment when all persons, who boarded with that intention, have disembarked , and during which:

a person is fatally or seriously injured as a result of being: in the aircraft, or in direct contact with any part of the aircraft, including parts which have become detached, or directly exposed to the blast of reactors, except in the case of injuries due to natural causes, injuries inflicted on the person by himself or others or injuries sustained by a stowaway hidden away from the areas to which the passengers and the crew normally have access;

or the aircraft suffers structural damage or failure: which alters its structural strength, performance or flight characteristics, and which would normally require major repair or replacement of the damaged component, unless it is engine failure or engine damage when damage is limited to the engine, its cowls or its accessories, or damage limited to the propellers, wing tips, antennas, tires, brakes , fairings or small notches or perforations in the coating,

or the aircraft has disappeared or is completely inaccessible.

Plane crashes and car accidents are often fatal. They are spectacular and often called disasters. They are accompanied by explosions and fires.
