“A Quiet Summer Day” was one of the first piano solo instrumentals that I composed. I wrote this when I was in college — back in the early 1980’s.

When I was a kid, summer was my favorite season. I always looked forward to our family summer vacation at the Jersey Shore.

There’s nothing like a lazy day in June, July and August. This piece is one of my favorites.

I can remember getting on my bike early in the morning to head down to my friend’s house and staying out all day. My mom told me to be home in time for dinner.

After dinner I’d be back outside until well after dark. It didn’t get dark until 9 pm, so I took full advantage of the daylight hours.

I suppose I should have called this piece “A Loud & Busy Summer Day”, which would better describe my days growing up in Turnersville, NJ — but there were the rare quiet times, which are what inspired me to write this piano solo.

Maybe the best memory was when we’d get a good summer downpour. I’d sit on my front porch and watch the rain come down. Of course, that inspired me to write “Rain”, which I will be recording some time in the near future.
