E.T. Race: The Mantis

In E.T. lore, there is a particular race of aliens that has polarizing contradictions. On the one hand, the Mantis (or insectoids/Mantid) are said to abduct humans and given them holographic lessons about how to better the planet. On the other hand, they're known as heartless enslavers hell-bent on dominating humanity and harvesting our DNA. Not to mention forcing humans to mate with others of their race in bizarre fashion. Do you think they are two separate factions? Or is the deception and manipulation of humans so efficient it's all just part of the plan?
