Promoted as medicine, our children and lawmakers are subject to advertising that is simply false and misleading about marijuana products. In this presentation, participants learn how high-risk behavior affect the growing brain and cause addiction. A discussion of the current, global scientific literature says about the real and unknown health effects of marijuana and hash oil. Emphasis will be placed on the deleterious effects of marijuana on the developing brain and a growing body of evidence that these effects rival those of alcohol. The case will be made for the basis of sound parenting, prevention in schools and legislative policy to be built on the neuroscience of marijuana.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will learn:
1. How marijuana affects youth brain development,
2. The most up-to-date summary regarding current literature regarding marijuana, hash oil, and CBD health effects,
3. The real pros and cons of marijuana use as a medicine,
4. What sound marijuana policy should be based upon at home and in the legislature, and
5. A comprehensive model of prevention to change norms.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Crystal Collier has been working with adolescents and adults suffering from behavioral health issues such as substance abuse since 1991 and possesses a talent for making complex research and brain science easy to understand. She has been licensed by the State of Texas as a professional counselor since 1999 and counselor supervisor since 2008. 

Dr. Collier created a comprehensive prevention model to teach the neurodevelopmental effects of risky behavior to children, teens, and parents, which was selected for the 2015 Prevention and Education Commendation from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Crystal teaches counseling skills and addiction classes as an adjunct professor. In 2018, she was awarded the Torch Bearer of the Year award by the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and a research fellowship by the Hope and Healing Center & Institute to write a prevention guide for parents. In 2019, the Houston Counseling Association named her Counselor of the Year.
