UK and EU agree to keep talking but warn 'no-deal Brexit' is now likely

The United Kingdom and the European Union have warned a no-deal Brexit was now likely, even as they agreed -- once again -- to extend trade talks beyond a self-imposed Sunday deadline. (CNN)

The talks were initially extended until Sunday after Wednesday's meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, billed as a "last-ditch effort," ended without an agreement. (CNN)

No new deadline has been announced on Sunday, but von der Leyen said it was "responsible" to go "the extra-mile," adding that she had "constructive and useful" phone call with Johnson. (CNN)

The U.K. left the European Union at the end of January, and negotiators have been working since then to hammer out the details once the U.K. is officially on its own. But the official transition period is set to expire at the end of the month; without an agreement, the two sides could face a host of problems. (NPR)

New tariffs could hurt businesses and increase prices for consumers. All goods moving between the U.K. and the EU will eventually be subject to customs, leading to delays and uncertainty. U.K. citizens wishing to travel throughout the EU — and vice versa — will face new restrictions. (NPR)

Business, food and farming leaders have implored Boris Johnson to rule out a no-deal departure from the EU, saying it would be “catastrophic” for employment, supermarket supply chains and farming. (The Guardian)

The food industry said it was “just bonkers” that UK businesses did not know what the trading conditions would be in 12 working days’ time. (The Guardian)
