Gestalt Psychology - History of Psychology Series
Lecture Topic: History of Psychology – Ep 12 – Gestalt Psychology
In this lecture we will review Gestalt Psychology and its definition. In its attack on the psychology establishment, Gestalt psychology focused primarily on the elementistic nature of Wundt’s work. Gestalt psychologists referred to Wundt’s approach as “brick-and-mortar psychology.” They maintained that when sensory elements are combined, the elements form a new pattern or configuration. Gestalt is very difficult to explain. However, Kohler noted that the word was used in two ways in German: 1) shape or form as a property of objects; 2) whole or concrete entity that attributes a specific shape or form (Schultz, 2015).
